Swannie’s Shoutout

Back in the day, Swannie’s Comedy Underground was just a 5 minute walk from the Seattle Kingdome, home of the Seattle Mariners baseball team. It was a hot spot for fans to come catch a show after an afternoon ballgame, making for a full day of entertainment. Apparently, the club was a draw for the players as well.

On Saturday, May 2nd, Hall of Fame pitcher Randy “The Big Unit” Johnson’s jersey number (51) was retired at a ceremony held at T-Mobile park, where the Mariners now play.

In his acceptance speech, Johnson regaled the stadium crowd with memories of his time on the mound and with his off-season exploits in 1994, including “working as a bouncer and checking I.D.s and working on my one-liners at Swannie’s Comedy Underground … anyone remember that place?” he asked. The crowd responded with enthusiastic applause and cheers.

Thanks for the shoutout Mr. Johnson, and congratulations on the well-deserved honor!

See the moment and watch the full ceremony on YouTube.
